There are good golf tips and bad golf tips. The question is, “how do you decide which golf tips to listen to?”

This question has been brought home to me recently because a good friend took up golf about two years ago. He has really caught the bug and plays several times a week. He also has lessons and practices frequently. Whenever we play together he is constantly asking for tips and advice about his swing.

It is my belief that you should only give a player a golf tip if you are sure that it will fit in with the rest of his swing. I have seen far too many players lose their swings when trying to adopt a golf tip which simply does not fit in with everything else that goes on when they swing the club.

OK, I know, there are certain golf tips which are universally sound, like, “keep your head still.” But equally there are plenty of other golf tips that can be ruinous even when given with the best of intentions.

In particular I recall a good player with whom I’d played many rounds who always drew the ball right to left, usually with good control. One day when his draw was a bit exaggerated, his partner suggested this perfectly sound golf tip: “You know, if you were to keep your right elbow well tucked in on the downswing you would lose that nasty hook.”

The suggestion was well meant. However, for a player who had a well grooved habit of swinging slightly over the top of the ball, as Arnold Palmer was wont to do, it proved to be one golf tip too much. He became so conscious of his right elbow that it threw the whole of the rest of his swing out of shape and it took him months to get it back again.

The point is that the golf tip didn’t fit in with the rest of his swing.

This is a mistake that many golfers make. They listen to all the golf tips out there and try to adopt them all in their desperate search for a good swing. It is my belief that your aim should be to groove a golf swing that will give you streams of straight and long golf shots by modelling your swing on one set of advice. Then you should develop a mind movie of that swing so that you can reproduce it whenever you play a shot.

Think how long some of the most famous partnerships between players and their swing coaches have lasted. Think of Jack Nicklaus and Jack Grout, Tiger Woods and Butch Harmon, Nick Faldo and David Leadbetter to name but a few. All these great players relied on one coach’s vision of their swing to keep their mind movie in shape. They did not go asking for golf tips from other players.

A poor grip may also negatively affect your swing and balance because we can tend to compensate for a poor grip by wrongly adjusting our alignment and shoulder turn. For a right handed player, can you not see any of your left hand knuckles as your look down on your grip? Is the tension of your grip too tight or too loose? Are you not holding the club in your fingers but instead in the palm of your hands? Ask yourself these questions.

2. Your Set Up:  Your stance to the ball can ruin your golf shots if you get it wrong! An incorrect address will get FedEx delivering to the wrong places! Same for your golf shots. You may be too close to the ball therefore inhibiting your swing, too far from the ball causing you to stretch. You may slouch over the ball too much. You may even dribble over the ball but if your address isn’t correct then you may as well dribble over your scorecard. How far do you stand from the ball? Are your feet, shoulders, hips and club face aligned to the target? Is your balance correct- the weight of your body should be more on the balls and middle of your feet rather than your heels. Is your body weight evenly balanced between your left and right feet? Ask yourself these questions.

3. Your Ball Position: Your ball position is so critical to the destiny of your shot! Quite simply if the ball is too far forward in your stance or too far back then not only does that induce a slice or a push but can cause the rest of your swing and your stance to over compensate and therefore go horribly wrong. For a right handed player are you adjusting your ball position correctly in relation to your left heel and distance from your body as you go up or down in club? Ask yourself these questions.

So Folks, if your golf game was rushed to accident emergency, the first thing the golf surgeon would do (besides scrub up) is fix these three basic fundamentals of golf. So these are the first things you need to do.

By just getting these three simple steps correct, you will be scoring much better, enjoying the game much more and the local wildlife will be very pleased!

Tip 1: Swing freely

This is mostly a mental challenge so you need to not get concerned about hitting a bad drive and tense up but instead just look at the targets and let the shot go without caring too much about immediate results. If you consistently are hitting bad shots then try to figure out quickly what you might be doing wrong but be sure to swing just as freely on the next drive off the tee.

Tip 2: Keep the right hand passive

If you are a right handed player it is very important to not get the right hand overly involved in the golf swing otherwise this can result in casting the club which can cause all kinds of problems including major loss of distance and accuracy. Use a light grip with the fingers of your left hand applying most of the pressure.

Tip 3: Use a light grip

There is no need to choke the club as that can add more tension to the swing and cause many swing flaws. Instead grip the club lightly and allow it to swing back and through fully. Using a light grip pressure also promotes greater use or leverage or lag which will help to increase club head speed and overall distance.

Tip 4: Get proper equipment for your swing type

If you swing the club at high club head speeds over 120mph then you need to get a stiff shaft or even super stiff and a loft of 8.5 degrees or 9 degrees. However if you have a club head speed under 100 mph then you need a regular flex shaft and a loft greater than 10 degrees to maximize the distance from your driver.

Tip 5: Stand the proper distance from the ball

Many new players like to use a baseball grip and extend their arms out too much which results in them standing farther from the ball than they should for optimal contact. The best grip for most players is the interlocking grip and the club should be gripped at a point where the arms would naturally hang to. This usually means the club is gripped fairly close to the body which promotes a steeper swing path however this is the ideal way to make the best contact. It is really important to hit a good drive down the first fairway, but it also needs to be straight and long. Those are the kind of drives that impress people. So what do you need to do to hit one those screamers off the tee?

Here are a few tips.

1. Make sure you have a full shoulder turn. If you cannot achieve this without raising your left heel off the ground, it does not matter. Doing this will enable you to have a fuller and more powerful swing.

2. The feet should be shoulder width apart, or slightly wider for a firm base. You do not want too much movement of the body during the swing.

3. Start the downswing by a leftwards movement of the hips. This will keep your hands and arms from coming in to the shot too soon.

4. Try and snap the hands through the shot at impact, and be sure to follow through long and low after hitting the drive.

5. Concentrate on swinging the driver in a smooth, unhurried, and rhythmic motion.

By making these small changes to your swing, you are putting yourself in a better position to hit longer golf drives.

Three Keys To Increase Distance With Your Golf Swing

For many golfers, a big concern is how to hit the ball farther.  Typically, a good swing with solid fundamentals will naturally allow you to hit the ball far provided you have good strength.  There are a few important keys that you can specifically work on to hit it farther.

The first key I recommend is having good angles in your setup or swing.  A good setup will have good knee flex and a correct bend from the hips with the weight on the balls of your feet.  A good setup is a critical component to not only swinging more on the correct path but also hitting it farther.  You want to have a good shoulder turn on the backswing where your shoulders turn a full 90 degrees.  This will allow you to swing the golf club over your shoulder and maintain good angles at the top of your backswing as well.  From there, you’ll be in a powerful position to swing back down through the golf ball.

Second key is swing speed.  You want to make sure you are swinging fastest at the point of impact.  Many golfers make the mistake of rushing their backswing, making it too fast and then from their it is forced to slow down coming into the golf ball when it should be speeding up at this point.  One key on timing of your swing is the backswing should be three times as long as the downswing.  Tour players were studied and it was recorded that they all have this correct tempo where their backswing all are three times as long as their downswings.  Make sure not to try to swing too hard from the top of your backswing.  Often times golfers try to hit the ball too hard resulting in lots of problems when hitting the golf ball.  You want to have a nice and smooth transition and allow the swing speed to increase as you are nearing the impact position.  This will maximize your chances of hitting the ball longer and straighter.  

Third key is creating lag in your swing.  You do this by hinging your wrists in the backswing which allows you to build up “leverage”.  Then on the downswing your hands will actually lead into the golf ball before the club hits the ball.  With the hands slightly ahead at impact, you’ll be assured of a solid strike which will make the golf ball travel farther.

How To Drive A Golf Ball Far And Accurately Consistently

There is no doubt that hitting the driver well makes the game a lot easier as many courses are quite long. It is almost a necessity to have that 300 yard drive if you want to succeed as a professional golfer since most tour courses are long and require good driving distance in order to be competitive. Here are a few tips that may help you to gain those extra yards in driving distance:

Tip 1: Strengthen your wrists

While golf does not require significant muscle strength, it certainly does not hurt to be physically fit and strong. The wrists play a key factor in being able to generate and support high club head speeds so be sure to do exercises that make the wrist stronger. These will usually involve doing some sort of resistance training like wrist curls with a dumbbell or on a machine at the gym. It cannot hurt to also do weight training exercises for the upper and lower body also since they all help to support the golf swing.

Tip 2: Develop greater lag

Lag is one the secrets to hitting the ball far almost effortlessly. It is defined as the angle formed between the shaft and the right hand if you are a right handed player and the smaller this angle is before impact the greater the club head speed will be through impact. One way to build greater lag is to start the downswing with a slight shift of your body weight to the left while keeping the club still at the top, this helps to load the club with energy and will help to create more club head speed.

Tip 3: Use proper equipment

If you generate a club head speed over 120 mph then you need to use a stiff flex driver with 7 to 8 degrees of loft for maximum distance. If your club head speed is lower than 100 mph then you need a regular flex driver with a loft around 11 to 12 degrees for maximum distance. Also be sure to get a driver that is not too long otherwise this will affect the accuracy of your shots and inaccurate drives are not usually very long.

Tip 4: Factor the wind

The wind can have a huge impact on the length of your drives. If the wind is blowing hard into your face then you need to launch your drives at a lower trajectory for maximum carry and roll. In order to hit your drives lower, tee the ball slightly lower and put the ball a little further back in your stance. If the wind is helping you then go ahead and launch the ball high or the normal trajectory you are used to. The ideal drive downwind is a high trajectory as this will ride the wind for maximum carry. To hit your drives higher tee the ball higher and put the ball a little further up in your stance towards your left feet. To improve iron play fast—and chop strokes off your golf handicap—look to your hands. It’s hard to hit quality shots if you don’t use your hands correctly. As a serious golfer looking to improve, you must learn what role your hands play in hitting iron shots. If you do, you’ll boost your game to a new level and you’ll whittle strokes from your golf handicap as well.

Many weekend golfers learn to hold a club either by taking golf lessons or reading golf tips in magazines or books. What they may not learn from this golf instruction is that the way you hold the club impacts on how you cock your wrists at the top of the swing. That in turn determines clubface position at impact. If your clubface isn’t square at impact, you’ll slice or pull your irons.

Weak Grip/Flat Wrist

If you’re right-handed, a weak grip encourages a cocking mechanism that produces a flat left wrist at the top of the swing. A weak grip for a right-handed golfer features the back of the left-hand pointing to the target and the “V” formed by your thumb and forefinger pointing toward your left ear. With a weak grip, you must keep your left wrist from cupping to maintain the clubface on line during the swing.

If your left wrist cups, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll rotate the clubface too far open on the backswing and throw the clubface off the correct delivery path. Only players blessed with ultra-fast hand speed, like Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson can square up the clubface at impact from this position. Making adjustments like this for usually spells trouble for players of all golf handicaps.

Strong Grip/Cupped Wrist

If you’re a right-handed player, a stronger grip accommodates more of a left wrist cup at the top. A stronger grip for a right handed golfer is one in which the back of the left hand for a right handed player points more toward the sky, and the target and the “V” formed by the thumb and forefinger points toward your shoulder. With this grip you must avoid flattening the left wrist too much as you hinge the iron to the top.

A stronger grip plus a flat left wrist at the top usually results in a laying off of the club or swinging too far inside. Either way, you must make adjustments to get the club back on plane and on the correct delivery path. If you don’t, your clubface won’t be square at impact. Again, making adjustments during your swing spells trouble for players of all golf handicaps, unless you have super fast hands.

Golf Instructors Favor Stronger Grip

Many golf instructors favor a stronger grip for weekend golfers. It’s a little harder to learn to control, but when paired with a slight left wrist cup, it provides for better overall club control and allows for more hinge. That in turn creates more lag in the backswing to downswing transition, generating more clubhead speed and increasing power.

For even more power, grip the club with a slightly stronger grip. To do that, make the “V” created by the left thumb and foreigner point toward the right shoulder, with the palm of the right hand facing the target. Be careful though. Too strong a grip results in a hook.

Your grip is personal. You should adopt one that feels comfortable to you. There have been as many great players with weak grips as there have been with strong grips. The key is to match the right grip with the correct type of wrist cocking mechanism, making it easier to return the clubface to the ball square. Do that and you’ll not only hit more solid irons, you’ll do it more consistently and you’ll chop strokes off your golf handicap.
