Golf Tips - The Lob Shot

Jeff Foster asked:

The lob shot in golf is one of the coolest shots to watch.

We’ve all seen a good lob shot executed where the golf ball pops quickly and high into the air then lands ever so softly on the green… like a butterfly with sore feet!

The problem here is that for us mortal golfers this is also one of the most difficult shots to perform. Not to worry though… here are a couple tips on how to play the lob shot.

First… you’ll want to weaken your grip by rotating your grip counter clockwise on the club just a bit (your left thumb will be pointing directly down the shaft slightly more counter clockwise). A weaker grip will have the tendency to keep the clubface open which allows the club to ‘slide’ under the ball more readily.

The clubface as it addresses the ball will be open.

With your stance open, position the ball just to the inside of your left heel.

As you begin your swing, you’ll set your wrists early. I don’t mean to say that you just pick the club up with your hands… not at all. We actually want a full swing with an early wrist set. In other words, you want to get the shaft of the club vertical/perpendicular to the ground as your hands reach the halfway point.

Now for the most difficult part… the mental part. Take a full swing.

The tough part here is to convince your mind that you do have to take a full swing even though the actual distance you want the ball to travel is minimal.

Most of our brains have trouble with this one. This is the part where you may hear someone tell you that you have to stay committed to the shot.

A tough commitment to be sure… but you must.

It’s the commitment to the full swing that usually goes awry for the average golfer. At the last moment, doubt creeps in and the swing suddenly decelerates. When this happens all bets are off and so are the chances of making a good golf shot.

Like any other part of the golf swing or golf game, the lob shot just takes practice. Practice not only leads to better execution but confidence as well. And a large part of executing the lob shot in golf really boils down to your confidence in yourself and your golf swing.

I have been playing golf for about 2 years…so think of it as hitting a 7 iron 150 yrds. My instructor says that “your worst putting job is better than your best chipping job” and that’s so true. Any other good tips.

Easy Traveling With your Golf Clubs

Golf Gift asked:

Golf clubs could be quite an expensive investment. However, aside from its cost, you also want to make sure that when you play, you are using your golf clubs that are in great condition to deliver your best game. This is why if you would be traveling with your golf clubs, it is imperative that they are protected from any damage caused by banging or rough handling. Here are a few tips to remember when you are traveling with your golf clubs.

Pack your golf clubs in a golf travel case or bag so that they will be protected. These are available from any golf store and you will surely find one that would fit your taste and budget. The two types of the golf travel cases available are hard shell and soft shell. If you would be traveling by air, it is more advisable to use the hard shell. Most airlines are willing to cover any damages if your golf clubs have been packed in a hard case first. However, you would still need to inquire about this with your airline company.

Hard shell cases are able to offer protection from demanding environments. Most of these are made with heavy molded plastic, which will help in protecting your clubs from hard throws, drops or any severe banging. The hard cases could cost a bit more than the soft cases, but the protection you would be giving your clubs would prove to be a worthwhile investment.

The soft shell cases could also be a good alternative, as long as you will be packing your clubs well. Although the level of protection your clubs will be getting would not be the same as with the hard cases, you could still ensure that they will end up with no damages by packing carefully. This would also work better if you will be traveling by car.

By packing your clubs carefully and placing them in a golf travel case, you would certainly be able to keep all your golf clubs safe from any damage that could be caused by elements or rough handling even when you travel.

Winter Golf Tips - How To Play Great Golf In Winter

Saturday, November 1st, 2008
golf tips
Abhishek Agarwal asked:

It can sometimes be very difficult to learn to play golf. Especially if you’re living in a rather cold place then the problems get furthered as the weather turns to be freezing. But it might work if you try working on a plan before the air becomes icy and when you would still be capable of practicing your game skills, not to worry about what season of the year prevails. This will help you work continuously on improving your game skills all year round, and not only when it is balmy outside. The other option would be to either move away from your place and vacation in a place where winter is warm and also has huge and grand golf courses too.

Well it is understood that the need to play golf is purely motivational, but even then there will be certain times when the course becomes very cold to allow any play in winter. This also combined with a possibility for dew frozen on the course, besides frozen water dangers can virtually impede a decent game. But if you still feel a strong urge to play, then the best alternative will be to play in the indoor golf area, or you could even try the indoor range. This way you can continue practicing your swing in cold and dreary months. In case you cannot avail a driving range then a reserved space in your own house that is free from any dangers should be good enough for you to practice swinging, maybe without using the ball.

Though this option might not seem like too much fun, the plus is that you can continue practice even though the weather is bad. Otherwise your initial games played when the weather becomes warmer will end up rather badly due to the lack of practice. Also during the winter season ensure you work out regularly and continuously. Make sure you continue to build lean muscles just as during golfing. Do not build up bulky muscles while not playing golf. Though waiting to play golf until the weather becomes warmer is almost torture, it is advisable to keep away from playing in extreme cold weather.

Health complications may result from playing in the cold as this way you would be putting your body through a huge amount of stress by making an effort to be warm and stay focused on the game simultaneously. The risk of getting hurt thus can rise dramatically and also increase chances of getting a muscle pull since they are not equally warmed up in the colder seasons. The injury in any season or time is bad, but when it is extremely cold you would be more vulnerable and get injured.

Ensure that you spend more time inside and not outside when the weather is cold. It is not worth to get hurt over a few small rounds of the game. Always try and make sure that during the colder seasons, you either play indoors or go to a warmer and more hot location to play golf. In winter you can try and visit a golf course located somewhere in deep south, this can be exciting as the weather would be warm enough for you to play outside. What you need to remember most importantly is the overall safety, when you are playing, playing well is good but getting injury due to it is not advisable.
