I suggest finding a used set from a friend or a cheap set of clubs from K-mart. No need to waste one thousand dollars on a nice set, when you may decide later that you don’t like golf very much. I started out with a set of my friend’s old clubs that I got for free; and when I started becoming more consistent with those clubs, I moved up to a nicer set.

The same goes for balls too. A lot of golfers will spend 40 dollars on a dozen Pro-V1’s, but when you are just starting out that is not necessary. Cheap used balls will do just fine. After four years of golf, I still score the same with a used dirty ball as I do with Pro-V1’s.

Tip for Beginner Golfers 2: Where to Start

For people that are really serious about becoming good golfers; get a lesson from your local golf pro. Even if it is just one lesson, the pro will be able to show you the proper way to swing the club.

Watch golf videos, and try to study the swing as much as possible. Practice swinging in your front yard. I know a teenage boy that just started playing less than a year ago, and he has an amazing swing, and a good game. He started practicing in his front yard about a year before actually stepping out onto the golf course. Now you don’t have to wait a year to go on the course; but the more practice you get before stepping out onto the course, the better you will be.

Go to the driving range a few times a week and hit a bucket of balls. Then once you feel confident enough at the range, try out a par-3 course. They are great for beginner golfers.

Once you make it out to a regular eighteen hole course, keep in mind golf course etiquette. People behind you are not going to want to wait. Remember to fix your ball marks (the “dent” in the green that is made when you hit your ball onto the green). Also replace your divots (the grass that is torn from the ground by your club when it is swung.)

Some common errors that beginners make:

1.) Trying to crush the ball

Many new golfers step up to the tee box and think, “I have got to crush this ball as far as I can!” Do not make that mistake! If you take the biggest, most powerful swing you can, I will make a bet; one, that the ball probably will not go straight, and two, that it will not travel nearly as far as it would have, if you would have taken a swing with half as much power. If the swing is kept nice and relaxed, your club will stay on the proper swing path, and your swing will have much more rhythm. If you have a problem with trying to kill the ball, step up to the tee box, and think “nice easy swing.” Also, it may help to take a three-quarters length swing. On the takeaway, only go back three-quarters as far as you normally would.

2.) “Scooping” the ball

When hitting iron and chip shots, you may think that in order for the ball to go in the air, the club must hit up on the ball. Many beginners attempt to help the ball in the air by “scooping” it. In reality, hitting DOWN on the ball, not up, is what actually carries the ball into the air. The loft of the clubface will do this for you, if you just hit down on the ball. In order to hit down on it, your hands should be ahead of the clubface when contact is made with the ball. The club should also hit the ball first, and the ground second.

3.) “Going for it”

Imagine, you are on a par 5. You hit a nice drive straight down the middle. You are 200 yards from the green, but there is a pond surrounding the green. You can SOMETIMES hit an accurate shot 200 yards. What do you do? Lay-up, or go for it?

Beginner golfers lose so many strokes when trying to “go for it.” It is so tempting. “If I make it on the green, I’ll have an eagle putt!” But that’s being greedy. The smart choice to make, if you are not confident in hitting the green, is to lay up! In the situation I just described, if you lay up and hit the green on your 3rd shot, there is still a good chance for a birdie, and an even greater chance for a par. Don’t get greedy; play it safe, because there is nothing wrong with a par.

Your trailing or bottom hand is the stronger hand for most golfers. For example, if you are right handed the bottom hand will be your right hand. This hand should be positioned to extract a powerful drive without over powering your lead hand. Your hands should be placed in equal formation. That is what makes a great player great. The problem of some players is that the rush the swing. When you do this you lose your balance the ball will not drive properly. If you watch the professionals play, they make their swing and grips look so easy. The swing the club smoothly and they hit the ball hard. Balance is the key; if you have a good relaxed grip and keep your balance you should notice a huge improvement in your game.

These things don’t happen over night so be patient and with a lot of practice you will notice an improvement. Practice at a driving range so you can see how you are driving the ball. Concentrate and follow through and remember it is all in the wrist.
